In the summer of 2018, I made a bold decision to embark on a Global Volunteer Exchange to Mexico City. Little did I know that this step outside my comfort zone would bring forth invaluable lessons and transformative experiences. Through teaching English and immersing myself in the vibrant culture, I discovered personal and professional growth beyond my wildest imagination.
I would like to share some of my main learning from my 6 weeks on exchange:
1. Embrace the Unknown
One day I was approached by a couple of people at a table near the food court of my university. Within a couple of days of making an account on the AIESEC website, I had already met with my designated experience manager. It wasn't long before I was approved to volunteer for Trazos, a Mexican National project that aimed at improving English proficiency for all ages. At the time, I wasn’t really sure what I even signed up to do, but I knew that whatever happened, I am going in with a positive mindset and ready to learn. I wanted to get to know the people, the culture and, of course, the cuisine.
2. Discover the Unexpected
Believe it or not, my first meal in Mexico ended up being a Cinnabon from the airport - my first time ever having a Cinnabon! Yes, it was not your typical Mexican meal, but it was already something out of my comfort zone that I didn’t expect. This small act served as a reminder that embracing the unfamiliar, even in simple ways, can open doors to unexpected joys and broaden our horizons. Through the weeks that followed, I fell in love with everything Mexico had to offer over and over again.
3. Teaching and Exploring Go Hand in Hand
Volunteering for the Trazos project offered a unique opportunity to teach conversational English to college students and young adults. Simultaneously, it allowed me to explore the authentic parts of Mexico City, visiting museums, parks, taco stands, and renowned cafés. This experience reinforced the significance of education and cultural immersion in expanding one's perspective.
4. Friendships Form Beyond Borders
My host family embraced me as one of their own, sharing meals, outings, and even attending a family event. Their warmth and hospitality taught me the value of forming connections across cultures and creating lifelong memories. The bonds I forged with fellow exchange participants from diverse backgrounds further emphasized the transformative power of intercultural friendships. My closest friends were from Venezuela, Colombia, China, Poland, Germany, and, of course, Mexico. Many of the friendships I formed then are still strong today, and I am so lucky I got to experience living in a different country with such amazing people.
5. Share Gratitude for Growth
When it came time for my exchange to end, I didn’t want to go home. 6 weeks had passed by so fast, and I wasn’t ready to return to my mundane schedule away from adventure. As my exchange drew to a close, I realized how much I had grown personally and professionally. Despite challenges and unexpected situations, I learned to adapt, develop resilience, and embrace the beauty of personal development. The experience fueled a deep sense of gratitude towards the AIESEC committees that facilitated my exchange and provided a platform for growth and self-discovery.
My Global Volunteer Exchange in Mexico City taught me that stepping out of my comfort zone leads to extraordinary personal and professional growth. It highlighted the importance of embracing the unknown, cherishing unexpected discoveries, forming meaningful connections, and expressing gratitude for transformative experiences. I am forever grateful to AIESEC for granting me the opportunity to expand my horizons and develop into a better version of myself.
